Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
If your Aprilaire vent sanitizing system has stopped working, you already know the air in your Fresno home doesn’t smell the way it should. We stock and install Aprilaire-compatible vent sanitizing units, and a typical replacement in Fresno runs $285 to $495 installed, including the part, labor, and a written 365-day guarantee. Most jobs are done in under two hours, and we carry the common units on our trucks so there’s no second trip.
Owners usually discover this part has failed one of two ways. Either the little indicator light on the unit goes dark and never comes back, or the air coming from the vents picks up a stale, musty edge that wasn’t there before. The Aprilaire vent sanitizer works by generating controlled levels of ozone that neutralize odors in the duct system. When that stops happening, the change is subtle at first, then it isn’t.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire vent sanitizing systems go back years and span a few different model series. The ones we see most often in Fresno homes are the Aprilaire 1850, 1950, and 1952, along with a handful of the newer Aprilaire 5000 and 8158 units that got retrofitted with the sanitizing add-on. If you’ve got a unit with a metal housing mounted to the ductwork and a small power light, you’re in the right place.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Fresno owners: the Aprilaire 1850 and 1950 look nearly identical from the outside, but the internal plates and step-up transformer are not interchangeable. The model number is printed on a label inside the hinged door, not on the outside of the housing. If that label is faded or gone, we identify the unit by measuring the plate spacing and checking the wiring configuration. An original Aprilaire plate set costs more than a quality aftermarket equivalent, but the aftermarket plates have thinner ceramic coatings that tend to fail a year or two sooner in our dry Central Valley air. We’ll give you both prices and let you choose.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
- Odors return within days of a duct cleaning. The sanitizer’s ozone output has dropped below what’s needed to neutralize the smell. This is the #1 call we get from Fresno homeowners who just had their ducts cleaned and expected the odor to stay gone.
- No glow or a flickering power light. The bulb-style indicator on most Aprilaire units draws power through a small ballast. A flicker usually means the ballast is dying, not the plate. We replace the ballast and the plate together because a weak ballast shortens the life of a new plate.
- A sharp metallic smell near the air handler. This is ozone building up in the cabinet instead of moving into the airstream. It points to a clogged intake screen or a dead fan motor. Leaving it running like this can etch nearby metal surfaces.
- The unit hums but the air hasn’t changed. The transformer is working, but the plates have reached the end of their coating life. Plates in Fresno typically last 3 to 4 years because our hard water leaves mineral deposits that accelerate wear, even though Aprilaire specs them for 5.
- The breaker trips when the HVAC kicks into cooling mode. An old Aprilaire unit drawing too much current on startup can trip a 15-amp shared circuit. If this happens more than once, unplug or kill power to the unit and call us. That’s a wiring issue, not a filter issue.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacement actually costs in Fresno, and I’m giving you real numbers because that’s how we do business.
Plate replacement alone runs $185 to $275, depending on whether you want original Aprilaire plates or a quality aftermarket set. A full unit swap, which we recommend when the transformer or ballast has failed, runs $285 to $495 installed. That includes the new unit, all wiring, mounting hardware, a system test, and our 365-day Done Right Promise in writing. If it fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The price is the price, agreed before any work starts.
What drives the range is your existing duct configuration. A unit mounted in an easy-access basement or attic space takes under an hour. A cramped closet install in an older Fresno ranch home takes longer, and that labor difference is the only variable.

There’s one thing you can safely check yourself. Open the hinged door on the unit, unplug it from the outlet, and look at the plates. If they’re chalky white or flaking, that’s your answer. You don’t need tools, and nothing in there will hurt you when the unit is unplugged. That check takes two minutes.
What you should not do is attempt a plate or ballast swap on a unit that’s hardwired into the furnace circuit. Some Aprilaire units plug into a standard outlet, and some are wired directly into a junction box. If there’s no plug and the wires go straight into the housing, you’re dealing with live 120-volt connections. A wrong wire on a ballast swap can damage your furnace board, and that’s a $600 mistake. Ozone plates also carry a residual charge that stings if you touch them right after shutdown.
If the unit plugs in and you want to attempt a plate swap yourself, go ahead. We’ll still be here if it doesn’t fix the problem. If it’s hardwired, call us at (559) 272-4989 and we’ll handle it.
FAQs
In Fresno, most Aprilaire vent sanitizing units last 7 to 10 years, but the internal plates typically need replacement every 3 to 4 years due to mineral buildup from our hard local water. A unit can live through two or three plate changes before the transformer or ballast gives out. Call (559) 272-4989 and we’ll help you figure out where yours is in that cycle.
Most Aprilaire vent sanitizing failures can be repaired by replacing just the plates, ballast, or fan motor, and that costs less than a full unit swap. We only recommend full replacement when the transformer has failed or the housing is corroded beyond being useful. We’ll show you what we found before we quote either option.
A plate replacement takes about 30 minutes. A full unit replacement takes 1 to 2 hours depending on how your ductwork is laid out. We’re usually in and out in a single visit because we carry the parts on the truck.
Yes, we stock original Aprilaire plates, ballasts, and replacement units, plus quality aftermarket equivalents, on our Fresno trucks right now.
